About John Carr

Dr. John Carr is a quadruple board-certified surgeon with over 22 years of experience in general surgery, trauma care, surgical critical care, and critical care echocardiography. His distinguished career spans clinical practice, academic leadership, and editorial contributions to the field of emergency surgery. Dr. Carr earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Indiana University before completing his medical degree at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He underwent rigorous surgical training at Henry Ford Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident in General Surgery and completed a research residency in vascular surgery. He further specialized through fellowships in cardiothoracic surgery at Rush University Medical Center and the University of Chicago, and later in surgical critical care at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Throughout his career, Dr. Carr has held academic appointments at prestigious institutions including Rush University Medical Center, the University of Chicago, and Michigan State University. His clinical roles have taken him across Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Iowa, where he has served in both permanent and locum tenens capacities in trauma and general surgery. His professional affiliations include the American Board of Surgery, American College of Surgeons, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma. He has also held national leadership roles, including election to the Pediatric Chest Network Steering Committee. Dr. Carr’s commitment to excellence has been recognized through multiple honors, including listings in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Best Surgeons in America, and Guide to America’s Top Surgeons. He is a recipient of the American Medical Association’s Physician Recognition Award and the Hero of the Heart Award from Rush University Medical Center for compassionate patient care.
